The Exit
The night two royals decided to leave
On 8 January 2020 a statement appeared on the Sussexes' own website before the palace had cleared it. Harry and Meghan announced they intended to step back as senior royals, carve out a progressive new role, work to become financially independent and split their time between Britain and North America. No senior working royal had ever tried to keep the title and drop the job. Buckingham Palace, blindsided, could manage only that discussions were at an early stage and that the situation was complicated.
Ten days later the terms landed and they were not a negotiation. There would be no half-in arrangement: no HRH in active use, no military appointments, no representing the Queen. The couple would repay the Frogmore Cottage renovation costs and give up public funding. What had been announced as a redesigned royal life became, within a fortnight, a clean exit — and by late March they were gone, first to Vancouver Island, then to California.
